Possession ranges from full displacement of the host's presence, through dialogue states, to mild inspiration. Some is sought and ritualised; some is diagnosed as affliction and treated.
The social reading
I. M. Lewis argued that possession cults often give voice to the marginal — frequently women and low-status men — enabling protected criticism and claims. The argument has been criticised as reductive but remains an influential lens.
