Who actually practises
Korean musok is overwhelmingly female-led. Southern African ancestral mediumship draws heavily on women. Siberian records include prominent udgan. The male shaman of popular imagination is partly an artefact of who male ethnographers could access.
Beyond the binary
Chukchi 'soft man' transformations and roles recorded in several societies involve gender crossing tied to spirit relations. These should be described in their own terms rather than mapped onto modern Western categories.
Power and constraint
Ritual authority can offer women real influence while leaving wider structural inequality intact. Both facts are usually true at once.
